Just FYI: There's speech synthesis PCMCIA card (yes, we can go out with this!) from Hitachi micro computer co., designed for Japanese speech synthesis. Usage is very simple: just write() Japanese phonetic string into character device, then the card will generate the sound. The driver is ready for merge and I sent to hosokawa-san (it needs to be merged with PAO PCMCIA support) For non-Japanese people: I have never tried, but maybe we can: - Use the card so that it will pronounce English text Dictionary for English word -> Japanese phonetic letter is necessery but if we got this it is simple query-and-replace - generate voice data for English - need more document/whatever from Hitachi... If any of you are interested in getting/beta-testing the driver, pls let me know. The card is not very popular (we must order directly to Hitachi I think), but this may of help for some people. itojun
