XFree86-4 can run two different cards at the same time (which i have done), but i'm not sure what hte upper limit is, or whether it'll work consistently. check the XFree86.org documentation, and contact one of their mailing lists to find out. my best suggestion to you is that you first see if the cards are supported, then double check that you have the same cards accross teh board. one of the major things that comes in very handy is 'xinerama', which allows you to move desktop items between two screens. the limitation is that it does not work if you have two different video cards. they all have to be identical (please double check this too, since i've not been keeping up with XFree86 at all).
