I've just tried this in reverse, and I discover that the performance is acceptable, but significantly slower than telnet. In particular, things like iconifying windows, covering them and then uncovering them, cause a significant amount of traffic. I think I wouldn't bother doing this for xterm, but it might be interesting for real X applications.
