I'm one who advocated this in the past, but I don't think the objections were "no way we'll ever do this", they were "the current way bento works doesn't allow this, so you'd need to rewrite the scripts too." The issue is being able to selectively make multiple packages from a single port. Last time it came up the consensus was that it is easier for bento to do this by using slave ports (no changes necessary), than by using makefile magic and rewriting the scripts. Again, I was on the side advocating the latter, but since I don't have time to do the work I didn't have much basis to argue from, so I dropped it.
