An internal modem would be preferred but I would consider otherwise. My main requirements are stability and a lack of any kind of external management (I want my box to be solely in control, not a proprietary web or telnet interface). I have suffered for far too long with an awful DSL router/firewall that goes down at the slightest provocation and offers no real authentication!
