I can ypcat passwd and ypcat group and see sensible things. I have the following as the last entry in master.passwd, as edited using vipw: +::::::::: and the following in /etc/group, also as the final line: +::: /etc/auth.conf and /etc/pam.conf are as-shipped. uname -a shows: FreeBSD hive1.qsi.net.nz 3.3-RELEASE FreeBSD 3.3-RELEASE #3: \ Sat Dec 4 16:03:07 NZDT 1999 \ jabley@hive1.qsi.net.nz:/usr/src/sys/compile/HIVE i386 I can't get regular system utilities like su, chown, chgrp, etc to recognise the users in and groups in their respective nis maps. I suspect I am missing something simple :) If anybody could point out the obvious error here, I'd be very happy.
