Most likely this is the case. For security level check with: sysctl -n kern.securelevel If it is not -1, then try to change it and ping the localhost again. The other option depends on the firewall you use. For example if you use = ipfw, in the kernel config you will have: options IPFIREWALL # enables IPFW And you should put this option: options IPFIREWALL_DEFAULT_TO_ACCEPT # sets default policy to pass = what is not explicitly denied if you want to make it run without specifying explicit rules. If you use ipfilter you may have ibn kernel config: options IPFILTER And you should not have without additiobal configuration this: options IPFILTER_DEFAULT_BLOCK Hope the above helped you, let us know if this was OK.
