Unfortunately, the site is over 3.5 hours away, so removing tapes or anything else is not really an option except for maybe quarterly. That is actually why I'm thinking along the lines of using a hard drive. Failure rates are lower, transfer speeds are faster, and data retrieval is much quicker. Is it possible to back up to a hard drive? hank -----Original Message----- From: Nick Evans [mailto:nevans@nextvenue.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 2:03 PM To: 'Hank Wethington'; BSD Subject: RE: backing up not a bad idea. i guess it depends on the volume of information you are planning on backing up. what about the idea of storing your backups offsite? unless you decide to get removeable drives then this would not be possible. yet it only really applies to large backup operations or environments where a long archive of data is required. cost is also a factor as the price tape media is significantly less than harddisk media. -----Original Message----- From: Hank Wethington [mailto:bsd@info-logix.com] Sent: Wednesday, July 19, 2000 4:51 PM To: BSD Subject: backing up I have been looking at different ways to back-up my system over the last 2 months. Well, it is now time to just get it done. But before I rush out and buy a SCSI tape system, I ran in to one potential solution and I was wondering if anyone has tried it. Is it possible to back up to a hard drive as one does to a tape. This would include incremental backups as well as full backups. With the cost of large IDE drives, it seems like such a perfect solution. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
