Cleaning-up xdm-pid in my (obsolete) /etc/rc.local and then starting xdm resolves the problem. I guess one of these days I wll change over to rc.d. But, rc.local works... I should have read more about xdm before talking about the log file. I did read the man page, but, not looking for the log file location. It is a good man page. I see quite a few questions about starting xdm. I think the difference between the FreeBSD FAQ and the XFree86 README confuses some people.
