 This issue can be traced to user error:  StarOffice requires procfs, and I 
 had inadvertantly removed the mount from /etc/fstab.  restoring the /proc 
 procfs mount point eliminated the problem.
 
 This issue has therofre been satisfactorily resolved and may be closed at 
 your earliest convenience.
