I was recently informed that it's not possible to upgrade directly to 3.4 for just this reason. Try upgrading to 3.2 (which is known to work) then 3.4. If you are feeling adventurous, try upgrading to 3.3 first then let me know how it works. :) I will be updating that page once I finish my updating to 4.0 tests...
