When you install the port, the pkg-message gives you instructions on how to do this. For gdm 1, you can add en entry to /etc/ttys to start it (basically replace xdm with gdm in ttys). For gdm2, you need to use the included ${X11BASE}/etc/rc.d script to start it up.
