If I login as root, and run 'xdm -nodaemon', then the login screen appears and I am able to login as a user successfully. However, if I try to login as root via the xdm screen, then I am just returned to the login screen again. The behaviour is a little odd in that the login window does not explicitly tell me that login has failed. What happens is that the screen turns black for just a second, as if restarting the X server, then another login screen appears. Any ideas?
