As I said when I asked for this to be reviewed, I didn't make any localisation changes as awk now claims to have locale support. Unfortunately no-one offered to review it :-( I did look at including the previous changes, but 1) I didn't understand them 2) They broke the regression tests (maybe this is a problem with the regression tests?)
