I assume you mean XDM, not xpm (which are pixmaps). :-) In /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/xdm/Xservers change: :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X to :0 local /usr/X11R6/bin/X -bpp 32 where you can change the bpp setting to any of 8, 16, 24, 32 (I have 8 MB on my vid card so I use 32).
