I tend to agree. "Root knows what he's doing" is a pretty fundamental design "feature". I have personally used this on a few occasions and I was pleasantly suprised to find that it did what I wanted. (like it does on SVR4, unlike what it did on SCO which always reset the bits.) I think we should change the man page to document the behavior, unless there's a major disagreement from somebody.
