By the time ppmquant gets the file input, the file, actually the /tmp/l2h* directory, has been already removed, resulting in the above it seems. Do "ktrace -di -f log latex2html file.tex ; kdump -n -f log | less". Then search for string "/tmp/l2h". You will see that directory is removed well before ppmquant get to do its thing. (Mind that i have not checked if any of the file handle(s) is retained, or retained file handle is not closed, before directory removal.)
