X is your GUI. It sounds to me like your graphics adapter may require that you tweak your XFree86 setup once the system is installed. The XFree86 installer option which you mention (which I've never heard of ;-) may actually be started and running, but due to display misconfiguration may not be visible. Can you install it w/o XFree86? I don't even remember seeing the option you mention. What type of laptop? Or better yet - what type of video card? See if you can install it w/o XFree86. The installer I used (/stand/sysinstall) doesn't require X and was (is) really easy to use.
