Does the dir /usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/bitstream-vera/ exist? If not you have to install: x11-fonts/bitstream-vera and follow the instructions to change your xorg.conf and then restart X. If it exists, you have to add the dir to xorg.conf like so: FontPath "/usr/local/lib/X11/fonts/bitstream-vera/" under the "Files" section. Restart X. X should read ~/.Xdefaults on start up & your font will be used for aterm. xlsfonts should also now list the bitstream vera fonts.
