What I did do was keep booting kernel.save (which I copied from kernel.old as soon as I started having the problem; this tip brought to you by The Complete FreeBSD [get your copy now]). From there, I kept editing my kernerl and removing devices which weren't being used. Then recompiling. It kept finding stuff not in use (i.e. not found), so I kept removing them.
