To get around it, I found doing the "traditional" cd /usr/src/sys/i386/conf config -r YOURKERNEL cd ../../compile/YOURKERNEL make depend && make && make install works if the buildkernel fails, and afterwards I *can* successfully complete a buildkernel. Not sure what's broken, but something is flakey.
