This will get you most of the output in /var/log/kernel

touch /var/log/kernel

add the line 
kern.*     <tab>    /var/log/kernel

to /etc/syslog.conf

Make sure that its tab delimited

Tell syslog to reread its config file

kill -1 `cat /var/run/syslog.pid`
