I'm sure you can recall when it was nearly nonexistant. I suspect spammers like mailing lists because they can subscribe and get live e-mail addresses sent to them regularly (snagging the reply-to address...). I've oftened considered changing my reply-to setting to the mailing list address itself just to avoid them scraping my live address. Too late for the current one.
