It's alot easier to use the port and install it than installing the extensions alone. I've done it both ways and the port saved alot of time and headaches. If it is actually Apache 1.1.3 (not sure if it was a typo and you meant 1.3.1) that you're running, it'd be even a better choice because it'll upgrade Apache too.
