Right you are, John. The name mislead me.

Yes. pkg_info shows gal-0.9. Did "make deinstall" and "make
reinstall" in /usr/ports/xll-toolkits/gal but to no avail. Error
message (after shutting down X, logging out, logging in,
starting X, doing xterm, then balsa) same.

It apparently did. Built balsa as part of gnome-fifth-toe by
doing "make install" in /usr/ports/x11/gnome-fifth-toe .

midc's file find cannot find a file named "libgal.so.7".
Perhaps the executable's name has changed with a version change
to gal and we need a symlink. But to what?
