This could be a configuration problem on the part of the adaptor, or it could be bit rot. Is this really a 1542 (i.e. not 1542C or 1542D)? If so, you should probably replace it. I've had significant problems with a 1542A, including data corruption. There seems to be a bug in the driver, but nobody cares enough to fix it.
