Sounds like you installed an irc client that expects you to enter a hostname either at the prompt or in your environment. Try 'man irc' to see what the proper context is. If that doesn't work, try installing 'sirc' from the ports collection, it is a very easy to use IRC client. http://www.freebsd.org/ports/index.html for more information on the ports.
