It's not that the FreeBSD core team don't want FreeBSD to work across more platforms. But it takes people to want to do it before the work starts. It's a good thing, in and of itself, and will help FreeBSD, if only because the code cleanup necessary to get code working on a 64 bit processor will help make it more portable.
