Turns out this machine uses an S3 Trio 64V2/DX graphics card with 2048K RAM. I set up XF86 to use the S3 server, but it complained that it wasn't installed - I somehow forgot that part. I then installed the S3 server and GNOME, typed "startx" and I was in business! This is pretty nifty - I could get used to having four X-Term windows open.
