FreeBSD uses, I believe, the "nvi" editor by Keith Bostic. Supposedly nvi is a "bug-for-bug compatible replacement for the original Fourth Berkeley Software Distribution (4BSD) ex and vi programs." So far for me, it has seemed pretty faithful, except that, when you first enter a file, vi would show something like: "foo.c": 48 lines, 1020 characters at the bottom of the screen, whereas nvi shows: "README", unmodified: line 1 Kinda annoying, since the statistics (lines and characters) are usually important to me when editing something. But oh well.
