Like Samfs (Solaris) Tivoli (several) etc. I really need a hint where to look for it or whom to ask? A search on Google, the FreeBSD Faq and Manual, the ports collection revealed nothing. A search in old mailing list archives found netbsd thread on this topic from 1998... but only a discussion on starting HSM support in netbsd. It would also be sufficient, if there was a *BSD-DMAPI (also called OpenXDSM). Personally I would prefer a lightweight, open source, free solution, as this will be used in a scientific program. And I would like to have it BSD, because that is with what I work, found most convenied for our computing needs and allows for a wide range of hardware. The two alternatives (commercial) I found so far would be a Sun + Solaris + Samfs or a completely handmade proprietary device. The first might have problems with the limits (see below) and the second will not allow for easy upgrade to new hardware (project launched 2006+) and software advancements. Our experiment will be hosted on the ISS (international space station). It needs to record a data stream (uncompressed images) at approx 260MByte per Second. In bursts of 45Minutes. Over 5-10 years, with periodic (i.e. Shuttle Mission Interval) replacement of permanent storage (best would be tape). Limits are spacial 494x435x248mm, power 200W (at 28VDC), disturbance of microgravity (by rotating media), noise.
