Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 09:57:23 +0100 User-Agent: KMail/1.4.1 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 8bit Message-Id: <200209130957.23975@gjm> Sender: owner-freebsd-stable@FreeBSD.ORG Precedence: bulk List-ID: List-Archive: (Web Archive) List-Help: (List Instructions) List-Subscribe: List-Unsubscribe: X-Loop: FreeBSD.ORG I'm thinking about getting a DVD writer as a backup device for use with my -STABLE system. It's not clear to me what level of support there is for this in -STABLE. 1. If I just want to treat a DVD as an unusually large CD, will that "just work"? I mean, can I build a 4GB ISO9660 filesystem using "mkisofs" and then write it to DVD using "burncd"? The documentation for "mkisofs" implies that arbitrarily large filesystems are possible, but neither the manpage nor the source for "burncd" says that anything other than plain ol' CDs are supported. 2. What's the state of UFS support, if any? Should I care? 3. Can I assume safely that any DVD writer that claims ATAPI compliance can be used happily with -STABLE? If not: the particular device I'm currently looking at is the Pioneer DVR-A04. It's a DVD-R/W drive; the manufacturer's web page says its interface is "ATAPI (ATA/ATAPI-5 & MCC3, SFFCINF 8090 Ver.5)". Thanks in advance for any replies. I'll be checking the list, but copies to me would be helpful as I'm not actually subscribed. (I already tried asking on -questions, by the way. No reponse.) -- g To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
