I've experienced bad-looking fonts in Xft applications for quite some time now & could use some help/advice fixing it/them. This started happening with Mozilla when it started supporting Xft (1.2.x I think & now with 1.3.x (Mozilla-devel)). What happens is a tiny serifed menu-bar font. Additionally, the URL-lookup/specification window appears to use that same tiny serif font. Other fonts, well, "just don't look good." Sorry, it's not easy to describe, but they're also small and serifed & weren't before. Under MS-Windows, Mozilla still looks fine. Other datapoints: This also happens (well, happened, in xfree 4.2.1) with Mozilla-devel-gtk2, xchat2 and gaim-snapshot, presumably because they all use Xft as well, perhaps via gtk2. OS: 4.8-RC (RELENG_4) as of 2003/03/15. XFree86: 4.3.0 built from source 2003/03/17, from a ports cvsup immediately before and thorough cleanout (pkg_deleting things and removing empty/unused directories in X, not portupgrade) of /usr/X11R6/*, including its "parents" (i.e. freetype2 & fontconfig) and "children" (everything that depends on imake and/or XFree libraries). Window manager: fvwm95 2.0.43a. Screen size: 800x600. Video card: Matrox G400 32mb. Color depth: 24 bpp "Regular" xchat 1.8.11 and gaim 0.59.9 look fine. Mozilla built without Xft (-DWITHOUT_XFT) looks ok (menu bar looks good, as with other apps) but not great (displayed text looks "ok" but not very good). This happened prior to XFree86 4.3.0 but now that the new XFree has Xft more "integrated" the problem continues to worsen. Additionally, as of XFree86 4.3.0, xclock seems to have "lost" its minute-scale & the hands are very faint. This is on the fvwm95 "icon menu." Up until xfree 4.3.0 this has always looked fine. Actually the minute scale is very tiny (or maybe some other color?) and the hands are now some different (lighter) color. So far I can't find any help from the Handbook. Documentation pointers are welcome. Thanks, -kc To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
