It seemed that the machine hung whenver it was doing video-related things.. So I swaped out the card, exercised the video (nothing like ls -laR / in one term and a repeat 100 cat handbook.ascii (1 meg file) in another, plus a netscape session), and couldn't reproduce the hangs.
