Here's my pam.conf for GDM:

gdm     auth            requisite       pam_unix.so     try_first_pass
gdm     account         requisite       pam_unix.so     try_first_pass
gdm     session         required        pam_permit.so

Now, make sure you don't have /etc/pam.d, or pam.conf will be ignored.
