So is your /usr now under /usr/usr?

What I have done is:
# mkdir /mnt/usr
# mount /dev/whatever /mnt/usr
# cd /mnt/usr
# dump -L -f - /usr | restore -r -f -
And then edit your /etc/fstab to reflect the changes
and reboot.
