Hello

I have just installed FreeBSD 4.2 on my = "Toshiba=20 4000cds" laptop computer. Since it does not have unlimited battery = capacity I'm=20 trying to figure out how to use the APM functionality in FreeBSD. I have = used=20 Amigas and Macs all my life so unix is a new world to me, and I'm not = very good=20 at this configuring and setting up things in textfiles = (yet).

So this is the story:
I ran the "apm = -z" and I got the message "apm:can't open /dev/apm: device not=20 configured".
I ran "apmd -v -d" and I got the = message=20 "apmd:cannot open device file /dev/apmctl: Device not = configured".
I looked in the /dev directory and = there was a file=20 there called "apm" and another one called "apmctl". Just in case i ran=20 "./MAKEDEV apm" and "./MAKEDEV apmctl" in hope that that might do = some=20 magic, which it didn't.
I looked in the "rc.conf" file=20 which says:
    = apm_enable=3D"YES"
    = apmd_enable=3D"YES"
    apmd_flags=3D"-d = -v"
Then I scratched my head, and after = that I looked=20 in the configuration file for the GENERIC kernel, and it said that = apm was=20 enabled. I even tried to make my own configuration file and kernel and I = actually made it work too (and thought to myself that I was getting = pretty good=20 at these unix things), but after booting the new kernel the problems was = still=20 there.
So now I don't know what to = do.

And any help would be greatly=20 appreciated.

Many thanks,
Arnfinn Aas = Eielsen
