Otherwise, I predict that this will rise to FAQ #1. The directory is needed and the ownership is important. The handbook already warns users updating from source to update the file. Now UPDATING does as well. Nothing can really be fixed beyond possibly adding a feature to mtree to obey #ifdef's for users who define NO_SENDMAIL. If you want such a feature, a PR (with a patch to mtree) could be filed for the maintainer of mtree.
