We used to see this from Qpopper when a mailbox began with a few null bytes. If you own the machine from which you're trying to pop your mail, edit the mailbox with vi and make sure that the first line of the file is a line that looks something like: From user@host.example.com If not, report the error message to the owner of the post office mail server.
