I had this same problem, and as far as I can tell it is because 
imake in XFree86-4 is broken.
Other things which use imake (net/vnc being the one other I have tried), 
die with the same error.

I ended up installing the devel/imake port, which, while it is
the XFree86-3.3.6 version, seems to work just fine.
