Applications shall be allowed to create : files in this directory, but shall not assume that such files are : preserved between invocations of the application. Update , but this probably isn't needed if /var/tmp is a symbolic link to /tmp. sysinstall used to create /usr/tmp, but that was changed to /var/tmp. I'm interested in hearing what other people think and possibly their uses for /var/tmp.
