Standby: keep state in memory, but assume lower power settings to conserve power, but keep transition to active state fast. suspend: Save state to disk, but keep the stuff in memory to allow fast recovery. Transition to hibernate after a while. Hibernate: save state to disk, if necessary, and assume the lowest possible power consumption state (not quite off, but as close as you can get with a soft power switch).
