I don't have what you'd call a critical ear when it comes to sound quality, but it was really scratchy. I ended up picking up an SB32 at auction and following the instructions for the sb16 PnP kernel config. Now everything is working great. Thanks to all the people that offered suggestions on getting the onboard chip to work though.
