It was buried in hundreds of messages on the stable mailing list, so I thought I'd mention my success in fixing it on this list. In sshd_config changed "UseLogin no" to "UseLogin yes". Don't ask me why it works. I'm just happy to be getting my cron, periodic, and logcheck reports. Rob.
