Since FreeBSD 4.3 I have had sendmail disabled. On 4/12 I upgraded from 4.4 STABLE to 4.5 STABLE. Since that particular upgrade I had not been receiving any periodic daily/weekly run e-mails. I checked the most recent maillog, and I found this bit of information: Apr 18 03:00:01 mrkocol sendmail[11578]: g3IA00fJ011578: from=root, size=262, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<200204181000.g3IA00fJ011578@mrkocol.efmm>, relay=root@localhost Apr 18 03:00:01 mrkocol sendmail[11578]: g3IA00fJ011578: to=root, ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:00:01, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=relay, pri=30242, relay=localhost [127.0.0.1], dsn=4.0.0, stat=Deferred: Connection refused by localhost Apr 18 03:01:03 mrkocol sendmail[11671]: gethostbyaddr(IPv6:::1) failed: 1 I compared this to an older maillog from when I was receiving the e-mails: Apr 10 03:05:19 mrkocol sendmail[77831]: g3AA11J77831: from=root, size=351, class=0, nrcpts=1, msgid=<200204101001.g3AA11J77831@mrkocol.efmm>, relay=root@localhost Apr 10 03:05:19 mrkocol sendmail[77927]: g3AA11J77831: to=root, ctladdr=root (0/0), delay=00:04:18, xdelay=00:00:00, mailer=local, pri=30351, relay=local, dsn=2.0.0, stat=Sent There are some obvious differences between the two ('relay=localhost [127.0.0.1]' vs. 'relay=local', etc.), except I am not sure if they are the cause of what is wrong here. At this point the only way I am able to send and receive mail internally is if I enable sendmail. Doing this adds approximately 5 minutes to my boot time, so I would like to avoid enabling it. I also never needed it before. Does anyone know the cause of this problem and how to fix it?
