"make search" relies on having an up to date /usr/ports/INDEX file. Try this: cd /usr/ports rm INDEX* portsdb -uU Your system load will hit something like 3--5 and your hard disk will sound as if it's trying to saw it's way out of it's enclosure, and the portsdb process will emit a bunch of warning messages you can probably just ignore.
