Is there any advantage ? Because I am using it all the time, and yes it has it's advantages. I had no problems so far, except on Compaq's and HP's on which it don't work at all. I've not come across any other machines that don't work (and on Compaq/HP you find out very quickly). In the seldom case that you installed dangerously dedicated, and it won't boot, it's a loss of 20 min to reinstall again using a 'normal' partition table entry (less than a windoze reinstall, and also far less frequently) I think it the faq very clearly explains everything about this. On old 486's with very small harddisks (which make up fine internet gateways), you gain some valuable Kilobytes of harddisk space :) and on 'dedicated' machines, I can't see any reason why I should have an fdisk partition table that freebsd doesn't need or use. I also spare myself the hassle of finding out the correct chs settings (which can be a nightmare on some machines) and it allows me to install it on harddisks >8G without having to set up a 'dedicated' fdisk partition for my root filesystem. Dangerously dedicated is a fine thing in my opinion, and if it doesn't work for you, then don't use it, and don't complain as you have been warned (maybe the warning message should write on which sort of machines it can be 'dangerous'). I'd be very unhappy to see this option go away (->reason not to upgrade) Rico Pajarola To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
