do you have: "zfs_enable=YES"  in /etc/rc.conf???

also after the system boots (either way...) 
see if zfs on root fs (/)  is to be mounted on /  "zfs set
mountpoint=/  ...."
or if in /boot/loader.conf there is a
vfs.root.mountfrom="zfs:zfstank/rootfs"  <=== example...
