As to the management of your APC SmartUPS, "PowerChute" is available for UNIX which should run just fine on your FreeBSD box. Don't know about the anti-virus part, however if you configure the workstations' anti-virus packages to scan their respective SMB (Samba) shares, you should be able to adequately address this issue. As to your back-up question, check out BRU (comes with FreeBSD in the ports collection I believe). We use BRU on our FreeBSD and Linux boxes and find it works flawlessly. Hope it helps!
