You should always read /usr/src/UPDATING before doing a make buildworld.
This is mentioned in there somewheres.  Run mergemaster to bring your /etc
directory up to speed, but read the man pages first.  ;)

I learned the hard way as well and now I read UPDATING like it's a
newspaper.  :)
